About Govt Polytechnic Tumkur
Government Polytechnic Tumkur was established in 1958 — the foundation stone of the present building was laid by His Holiness Dr. Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamigalu of Sree Siddaganga Mutt, Tumkur, in 1960, and the campus was inaugurated by Bharat Ratna Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 July 1962. The polytechnic operates on a 73-acre campus in the heart of Tumakuru city on BH Road — one of the largest campus footprints among government polytechnics in Karnataka — approximately 3 km from Tumakuru Bus Stand and Railway Station. It is run by the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, and approved by AICTE New Delhi.
Government Polytechnic Tumkur offers Diploma programmes in six engineering disciplines: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Automobile Engineering. Each programme follows the Karnataka Board of Technical Examinations (KBTE) curriculum. As a government institution, fees are approximately ₹4,270 per year — among the most affordable technical education options in the region. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. Lateral entry from ITI through DCET (Diploma Common Entrance Test) is also available.
Tumakuru's industrial ecosystem — silk, granite, electronics (Samsung Galaxy campus in Tumakuru SEZ), automotive components, and dairy processing — provides practical exposure for diploma students particularly in Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics branches. Government Polytechnic Tumkur has maintained dress code regulations for practical classes by branch — an indicator of the disciplined, workshop-oriented training culture. The 73-acre campus provides space for full-scale workshop infrastructure not available at smaller urban polytechnics. Siddaganga Mutt's foundational connection to the institution creates an institutional link to the broader Tumakuru educational network that includes SIT (NAAC A++ engineering college) under the same trust.
