About IIT Dharwad
Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is one of India's newest IITs, established in 2016 and located in Dharwad (operating temporarily on the WALMI campus in Dharwad, with a permanent campus under construction near Hubli). IIT Dharwad is a fully funded central government institution under the Ministry of Education, designated an Institute of National Importance. It is the only IIT in Karnataka and represents a major milestone in the state's positioning as a technology education hub.
Admission to IIT Dharwad BTech is exclusively through JEE Advanced — the most competitive engineering entrance examination in India. IIT Dharwad does not participate in KCET, COMEDK or any state-level admission process. Visit iitdh.ac.in for current programmes and admission details.

JEE Advanced — India's Most Competitive Exam
JEE Advanced is conducted by IITs on rotation for admission to all 23 IITs. Approximately 1.5 lakh students qualify from JEE Mains to appear for JEE Advanced, which tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the highest level of Class 12 difficulty. IIT Dharwad, being a newer IIT, has relatively more accessible rank cutoffs compared to older IITs (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras) while maintaining the same IIT degree quality, research infrastructure and brand recognition. Karnataka students with JEE Advanced rank who may not qualify for older IITs should consider IIT Dharwad as their home-state IIT.
IIT Dharwad — Karnataka's Own IIT
IIT Dharwad's establishment in Karnataka elevates the state's research and technology education ecosystem significantly. With Infosys and KLE Technological University (formerly BVBCET) located near Hubli-Dharwad, and the IIT's research infrastructure, the Dharwad-Hubli corridor is evolving into a significant technology and education hub for North Karnataka. IIT Dharwad's faculty includes IIT and IISc alumni conducting research in AI, advanced materials, smart manufacturing and sustainable engineering.
Permanent Campus Development
IIT Dharwad's permanent campus at Chikkamalligawad near Dharwad is under active construction with Ministry of Education funding. The completed permanent campus will feature state-of-the-art research labs, hostels, faculty housing and public spaces, transforming the Dharwad-Hubli region's educational landscape permanently. Karnataka students who join IIT Dharwad now are part of the founding generation shaping the institution's culture and legacy.
Career Scope
IIT Dharwad BTech graduates access the same IIT brand and recruitment channels as all other IITs. Top technology companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm and Bain recruit from IIT Dharwad alongside older IITs. Starting packages for IIT graduates significantly exceed Karnataka's general engineering college averages. MTech and PhD graduates from IIT Dharwad pursue faculty positions, PSU recruitment and research careers with the full weight of the IIT brand behind their qualifications.
