About Govt Polytechnic Shimoga
Government Polytechnic Shivamogga is a state-run diploma-level technical institution under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Government of Karnataka, located in Shivamogga (Shimoga) — the administrative headquarters of Shivamogga District and a major educational and commercial centre in the Malnad region of Karnataka. The institution is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka.
The polytechnic offers three-year Diploma programmes in core engineering disciplines including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, following the KBTE curriculum. As a government institution, fees are heavily subsidised at approximately ₹4,270 per year. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit — no entrance exam required. SC/ST students qualify for full fee reimbursement under Karnataka government post-matric scholarship schemes. Lateral entry is available for ITI certificate holders into the second-year Diploma through DCET.
Shivamogga is the gateway to the Malnad region and Western Ghats hill districts — a zone with significant hydropower, forestry, and agri-processing industries. Bhadra and Sharavathi river projects create demand for Civil and Electrical Engineering-trained technicians in the region. Shivamogga's position as a gateway district to Chikmagalur, Uttara Kannada, and Kodagu means the polytechnic draws students from a wide catchment area of Western Karnataka. Diploma graduates from Government Polytechnic Shivamogga can pursue lateral entry into BE programmes at JNNCE (National College of Engineering) or other VTU-affiliated colleges in the region.
