Govt Polytechnic Kolar

Government Polytechnic Kolar is a state-run diploma-level technical institution under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Government of Karnataka, located in Kolar — the administrative headquarters of Kolar District in south-eastern Karnataka, approximately 75 km from Bangalore. The institution is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka.

Government Polytechnic Kolar offers three-year Diploma programmes in core engineering disciplines including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, following the KBTE curriculum. As a government institution, fees are heavily subsidised at approximately Rs. 4,270 per year. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. SC/ST students qualify for full fee reimbursement under Karnataka government post-matric scholarship schemes. Lateral entry for ITI certificate holders is available into the second-year Diploma through DCET.

Kolar District has a distinctive industrial history — the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), once among the world's deepest gold mines, drove Kolar's economy for over 100 years before the mine's closure in 2001. Today, Kolar's economy is driven by sericulture (silk), tomato cultivation (KGF tomatoes supply Bangalore), dairy, and proximity to Bangalore's industrial expansion. The Kolar-Chikkaballapura region is also home to a significant granite and mining industry. Government Polytechnic Kolar serves students from Kolar, Bangarpet, Mulbagal, Srinivaspur, and Malur taluks. Diploma graduates can pursue lateral entry into BE programmes at VTU-affiliated colleges in Kolar, Chikkaballapura, or Bangalore.
