About Govt Polytechnic Kodagu
Government Polytechnic Kodagu is a state-run diploma-level technical institution under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Government of Karnataka, located in Madikeri (Mercara) — the administrative headquarters of Kodagu (Coorg) District, Karnataka's smallest district by population and one of its most distinctive by geography and culture. The institution is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka.
Government Polytechnic Kodagu offers three-year Diploma programmes in core engineering disciplines including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, following the KBTE curriculum. Government fees apply at approximately Rs. 4,270 per year. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. SC/ST students — including the Kodava and other scheduled tribes of Kodagu — qualify for government fee reimbursement and OBC/EWS scholarship schemes.
Kodagu is Karnataka's hill district — located in the Western Ghats at elevations between 900 and 1,750 metres — known for coffee, cardamom, pepper, and a distinctive Kodava cultural identity. The district has no engineering college within its borders (students go to Mysuru or Mangaluru), making Government Polytechnic Kodagu the only technical diploma institution in the district providing AICTE-recognised education locally. Kodagu's tourism, hospitality, hydropower (Harangi Dam), and coffee estate industries provide employment context for Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering diploma holders. Diploma graduates typically pursue lateral entry into BE at VTU-affiliated colleges in Mysuru or Mangaluru, both approximately 120 km from Madikeri.
