About Govt Polytechnic Bidar

Government Polytechnic Bidar has a history stretching to 1960, when it was established with three diploma programmes — Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering — with an initial enrollment of 90 students. It was one of the early government polytechnics in what is now north Karnataka. Over the following decades, the institution expanded its course offerings: Automobile Engineering was added in 1983 (with 30 seats), followed by Telecommunications Engineering and Commercial Practice in 1984. The college is located on Mailoor Road, Bidar-585403, Karnataka, under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, approved by AICTE New Delhi.

Government Polytechnic Bidar currently offers Diploma programmes in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Commercial Practice (Kannada), and Commercial Practice (English) — eight diploma programmes reflecting its expanded post-1983 curriculum. Annual intake is among the larger government polytechnic intakes in north Karnataka. Fees are approximately Rs. 4,270 per year. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit.

Bidar is in the Article 371(J) Hyderabad-Karnataka region, where constitutional provisions mandate reservations for local-origin candidates in educational institutions and government employment. Bidar District has the highest concentration of Urdu-speaking population in Karnataka and borders Telangana and Maharashtra — making it the most culturally intersectional district in the state. Bidar Fort, Bahmani tombs, and Bidriware (a unique silver inlay metalwork craft registered as a GI product) are the district's cultural landmarks. Since its founding in 1960, Government Polytechnic Bidar has contributed significantly to technical education access for disadvantaged and economically weaker students from Bidar, Basavakalyan, Bhalki, Humanabad, and Aurad taluks.
