Government Polytechnic Ballari has a history that predates Indian independence. The institution was established in 1937 as "Government Industrial School" under the Madras Province. It was subsequently renamed Rayalaseema Polytechnic, and in 1953 became Government Polytechnic, Bellary when the region was reorganised. This makes GPT Ballari one of the oldest technical institutions in what is now Karnataka. The polytechnic is located on Hospet Road, Fort Ballari-583102, on a 10.87-acre campus, under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, approved by AICTE New Delhi.

Government Polytechnic Ballari offers nine programmes — eight regular three-year diploma courses and one post-diploma. The eight diploma disciplines are: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Industrial Safety. The Metallurgical Engineering diploma is a rare and strategically relevant specialisation for Ballari — the district is the centre of Karnataka's iron ore mining industry, home to NMDC, JSW Steel, and Arcelor Mittal operations. Annual intake is approximately 480 students. Fees are approximately Rs. 12,810 per year.

The post-diploma Industrial Safety course provides advanced credentials for diploma graduates seeking safety officer roles — particularly relevant in Ballari's heavy industry and mining sector. GPT Ballari has 1,190 students and 23 faculty. Hostel blocks for boys and girls are available. The NSS unit organises service programmes annually. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling on SSLC merit. Government scholarship schemes including post-matric scholarships and SSP credits cover fees for SC/ST and OBC eligible students.
