About Govt Engineering College Raichur
Government Engineering College Raichur (GEC Raichur) is a government engineering college located in Raichur, the headquarters of Raichur district in North Karnataka, on the border of Karnataka and Telangana. Affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and approved by AICTE, GEC Raichur provides government-funded engineering education to students from Raichur, Koppal, Yadgir and surrounding Kalyana Karnataka region districts.
All seats at GEC Raichur are filled through KCET. As a government college in the Kalyana Karnataka region, it benefits from the special reservation under Article 371(J) for students from the six Hyderabad Karnataka districts. With an intake of 300 students, GEC Raichur offers BTech across five core engineering disciplines at the lowest possible cost for North Karnataka students.

Admission — KCET Only with Kalyana Karnataka Reservation
GEC Raichur is a Category 1 government engineering college. All seats are allocated through KEA's KCET counselling. A significant proportion of seats are reserved for Kalyana Karnataka (HK) region students under Article 371(J) of the Constitution — the special provision that mandates educational and employment reservation for the historically underdeveloped Hyderabad Karnataka region comprising Raichur, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Yadgir and Vijayanagara districts.
This HK reservation makes GEC Raichur one of the most accessible government engineering options for students from Raichur district and surrounding areas, as they compete primarily against other local students for a significant portion of seats rather than against all Karnataka KCET candidates.
Raichur — Power City of Karnataka
Raichur is known as Karnataka's power city due to the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) — one of Karnataka's largest coal-fired power plants with a capacity of 1,720 MW, operated by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL). RTPS is one of the most significant employers of EEE and Mechanical Engineering graduates from GEC Raichur, offering roles in plant operation, maintenance engineering, turbine servicing and electrical distribution management.
The Raichur district also hosts KPCL's coal yards, pumping stations and the transmission infrastructure connecting Raichur to the Karnataka electricity grid. For EEE students at GEC Raichur, this power sector concentration provides directly relevant industry exposure through plant visits, internships and pre-placement discussions with KPCL and NTPC engineers during the degree programme.
Proximity to Telangana — Dual State Employment Market
Raichur is located on the Karnataka-Telangana border, just 100 km from Hyderabad via NH-167. This border location gives GEC Raichur graduates access to two state employment markets. Hyderabad's massive IT sector (ranked second only to Bangalore in India for IT employment) is a natural employment destination for CSE and ISE graduates who can commute to Hyderabad or relocate at short notice given their familiarity with the border region.
The Hyderabad proximity also means GEC Raichur graduates can attend Hyderabad IT company recruitment events, tech meetups and engineering events that students from western Karnataka cannot easily access.

Career Scope for GEC Raichur Graduates
EEE graduates from GEC Raichur have the strongest local placement prospects through RTPS, KPCL, BESCOM and the regional power transmission infrastructure. Mechanical Engineering graduates target RTPS maintenance roles, KPCL's thermal plant operations and the expanding solar and wind power infrastructure being installed across the relatively flat, high-insolation terrain of Raichur district. CSE and ISE graduates access Hyderabad's IT market (100 km) and Bangalore's IT sector through VTU placement drives and off-campus applications. Civil Engineering graduates find strong government sector employment through PWD, KRIDL and irrigation department projects in the Krishna river basin infrastructure zone of Raichur district.
