About Government Polytechnic Sirsi
Government Polytechnic Sirsi is a state-run diploma-level technical institution under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Government of Karnataka, located in Sirsi — the commercial and educational hub of Uttara Kannada District's inland taluks, approximately 100 km from the coast at Karwar. The institution is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka.
Government Polytechnic Sirsi offers three-year Diploma programmes in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, following the KBTE curriculum. Government fees apply at approximately Rs. 4,270 per year. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. SC/ST and tribal community students from Sirsi's significant Scheduled Tribe population qualify for full fee reimbursement. Lateral entry for ITI holders is available through DCET.
Sirsi is the headquarters of the Sirsi-Siddapur areca nut belt — the world's largest areca nut (betel nut) growing region, where Karnataka produces over 70% of India's areca nut supply. The inland Uttara Kannada region around Sirsi is also rich in biodiversity — Shalmala River, Yana rock formations, Magod Falls, and significant forest cover. Electrical Engineering diploma graduates have employment relevance in the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation's substations and distribution infrastructure across the Western Ghats. Government Polytechnic Sirsi is one of the few technical diploma institutions in Sirsi's inland zone, serving students from Sirsi, Yellapur, Mundgod, Haliyal, and Joida taluks.
