About Government Engineering College Chamarajanagar

Government Engineering College Chamarajanagar (GEC Chamarajanagar) is a government engineering college located in Chamarajanagar, the district headquarters of Chamarajanagar district — Karnataka's southernmost district bordering Tamil Nadu. Affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and approved by AICTE, GEC Chamarajanagar provides government-funded engineering education to students from Chamarajanagar, Kollegal, Gundlupet, Hanur and Yelandur taluks.

With an intake of 240 students — among the smaller government engineering colleges in Karnataka — GEC Chamarajanagar maintains a focused academic environment. All seats are filled through KCET exclusively.

GEC Chamarajanagar is a Category 1 government college with all seats allocated through KEA's KCET counselling. Full Karnataka government reservation policy applies. The college is particularly important for ST community students from Chamarajanagar district, which has one of Karnataka's highest scheduled tribe populations including Soliga and Jenukuruba communities from the Biligirirangana Hills and MM Hills forest zones.

Chamarajanagar — Karnataka's Border District

Chamarajanagar district shares borders with Tamil Nadu (Erode, Tiruppur districts) and Kerala (Wayanad district). The tri-state boundary junction near MM Hills is a unique geographic feature. The Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and Biligirirangana Hills (BR Hills) Tiger Reserve cover significant portions of the district, making Chamarajanagar one of Karnataka's most ecologically significant districts.

The district's economy is agricultural-based (sugarcane, paddy, silk) with some industrial presence at the KIADB industrial area and the Chamarajanagar sugar factory. The Tamil Nadu border proximity gives graduates dual-state employment access — Erode and Tiruppur's textile manufacturing belt (60 km across the border) absorbs Mechanical and EEE engineering graduates from border districts.

Infrastructure

  • Computing labs for CSE
  • Electronics and communication lab for ECE
  • Mechanical workshop
  • Civil engineering structural and materials lab
  • Central library with VTU curriculum resources
  • Government-subsidised hostel at very affordable rates
  • NSS and sports facilities

Career Scope

GEC Chamarajanagar CSE graduates access Mysuru IT employers (80 km) and Bangalore (200 km) through VTU placement drives and off-campus recruitment. Civil Engineering graduates target PWD projects in border infrastructure, forest department civil works and the Kabini-Cauvery river basin irrigation projects. Mechanical graduates access Tamil Nadu's textile machinery and Erode-Tiruppur manufacturing market through the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border corridor. The smaller 240-student intake means students receive more individualised faculty attention, a significant advantage for GATE preparation and competitive exam success rates.
