About SJP Polytechnic Bangalore
Sri Jayachamarajendra (Govt.) Polytechnic (SJP), Bangalore, was established in 1943 by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya — the same statesman who founded UVCE in 1917 — making it one of the oldest technical institutions in South India. SJP was set up to provide value-based technical education and produce trained technicians for Karnataka's rapidly developing industries during the mid-20th century. The institution is administered by the Government of Karnataka under the Department of Technical Education and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka. The 14-acre campus in Bangalore houses India's most diverse polytechnic, with 16 diploma programmes across conventional and emerging disciplines.
SJP offers diploma courses in: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Instrumentation Technology, Power Engineering, Ceramics Technology, and other specialised trades. Total student intake is approximately 1,650 across all programmes, with current enrolment over 2,300. The Computer Science department holds NBA accreditation. SJP claims the distinction of being the largest polytechnic in South East Asia by programme diversity and campus infrastructure. The institution has a CANADA-INDIA Institutional Co-operation Project Centre on campus, and the Indian Ceramics Society, Bangalore Chapter, operates from the SJP campus — reflecting its unique ceramics technology specialisation.
SJP's alumni network exceeds 15,000 members across industrial and public sector roles. Placement recruiters have included TVS, Wipro, IBM, ITC, MRPL, Dell, BPL, Airtel, Voltas, Jindal Steels, ABB, Saint Gobain, Intel, and others. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. Government diploma fees apply — approximately ₹10,000–₹15,000 per year. SJP is a Category-1 government polytechnic and serves as a reference institution for curriculum design and faculty development for other polytechnics in Karnataka.
