About National Institute of Technology Karnataka Surathkal
National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal is one of India's premier engineering institutions, located in Surathkal, on the Arabian Sea coast of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. Established in 1960 as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) and upgraded to NIT status in 2002, NITK is designated an Institute of National Importance. It is consistently ranked among the top 15 engineering institutions in India by NIRF and is the highest-ranked institution in Karnataka's coastal belt.
Admission to NITK Surathkal BTech is exclusively through JEE Advanced (for home state Karnataka quota) and JEE Main (for other state quota and general seats). NITK does not participate in KCET or COMEDK. Admission details at nitk.ac.in.

NITK — India's Coastal Engineering Powerhouse
NITK Surathkal's beachside campus spanning over 295 acres on the Arabian Sea coast is one of the most distinctive settings of any NIT in India. The campus environment — with sea-facing hostels, a beach, and the Western Ghats visible from many buildings — creates a unique academic atmosphere. NITK's research infrastructure includes the NITK Technology Business Incubator, ocean engineering labs, coastal engineering research facilities and advanced computing clusters.
NITK's location on Karnataka's coast gives its civil and ocean engineering departments direct access to New Mangalore Port, coastal defence projects, offshore platform engineering and marine construction — research and industry opportunities unavailable to inland NITs.
Placement Record
NITK Surathkal consistently places in the top 10 NITs for placement outcomes. CSE and ECE graduates receive offers from product companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Qualcomm, MediaTek and Goldman Sachs alongside IT service companies. Median CTC for CSE at NITK has been in the ₹15–25 LPA range in recent placements, with highest offers from international companies. Mechanical and Chemical Engineering graduates access core engineering roles at ONGC, HPCL, ISRO, DRDO and manufacturing multinationals.
JEE Rank Required for NITK
Karnataka home state quota seats at NITK are among the most coveted in the state engineering admission system. JEE Main rank requirements vary by branch — CSE at NITK typically requires General category ranks within the top 5,000–15,000 at JEE Main. Mining Engineering and some other branches have more accessible cutoffs. Karnataka students who qualify JEE Main with strong scores should check NITK's opening and closing ranks on the JoSAA portal annually as these fluctuate with application patterns.
NITK Research and Global Recognition
NITK publishes research in international journals across coastal engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering and computer science. The institution has collaborations with TU Delft, University of Stuttgart, Georgia Tech and other global universities. NITK alumni lead engineering operations at multinational companies across the US, Europe, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, with a strong alumni network in the global ocean engineering and technology sectors that is unique among Karnataka institutions.
