About Govt Polytechnic Karwar
Government Polytechnic Karwar is a state-run diploma-level technical institution under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Government of Karnataka, located in Karwar — the headquarters of Uttara Kannada District on the Arabian Sea coast. The institution is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka. Government Polytechnic Karwar shares the broader technical education infrastructure of Karwar alongside Government Engineering College Karwar (GEC Karwar, est. 2009), which initially functioned from the Government Polytechnic campus on MG Road before relocating to its own campus in Majali.
Government Polytechnic Karwar offers three-year Diploma programmes in core engineering disciplines including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, following the KBTE curriculum. Fees are approximately Rs. 4,270 per year — the government-subsidised rate applicable at all state-run polytechnics in Karnataka. Admission is through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling based on SSLC merit. Lateral entry for ITI certificate holders is available through DCET.
Karwar is the headquarters of Uttara Kannada, Karnataka's only coastal district on the Arabian Sea. INS Kadamba — India's largest western naval command base — is located near Karwar, creating significant employment pathways in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering disciplines for technically qualified candidates. Karwar Port, the fishing industry, and coastal construction sectors also generate local demand for diploma-level technicians. The district's terrain — Arabian Sea coastline, Western Ghats inland — means Civil and Mechanical Engineering diploma graduates have strong employment prospects in both marine-adjacent and forest-industry sectors. Diploma holders from Government Polytechnic Karwar can pursue lateral entry into BE at Government Engineering College Karwar or other VTU-affiliated colleges.
