About Govt Polytechnic Gulbarga
Government Polytechnic Kalaburagi was established in 1956 — one of the early government polytechnics in Karnataka, predating the state's formation in 1956. The institution is located on a 6.7-acre campus at Aiwan-E-Shahi Area, Kalaburagi 585102, near PDA Engineering College, and is wholly run by the Government of Karnataka under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE). It is approved by AICTE New Delhi and affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Karnataka.
The polytechnic has a notable administrative role beyond its academic function: it serves as the Nodal Centre for online state-level diploma admission for the Kalaburagi division, and is the Zonal Valuation Centre for Board of Technical Examinations for the districts of Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bidar, and Raichur. This regional coordination responsibility makes it the most significant government polytechnic institution in the Hyderabad-Karnataka zone. Six diploma programmes are offered with a combined annual fee of approximately ₹12,810 per year. Courses include Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, and Commercial Practice disciplines.
Kalaburagi falls in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, where Article 371(J) of the Constitution provides reservations for local-origin candidates in educational admissions and government employment. This applies to DTE polytechnic admissions, giving students from Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, and Vijayanagara districts priority in local institution seat allotment. The institution has received project grants from both Central and State governments for infrastructure and curriculum development. Campus facilities include a library, hostel, cafeteria, sports complex, Wi-Fi, auditorium, and departmental laboratories. Admission through DTE Karnataka centralised counselling on SSLC merit.
