Sagar is 100 km from Shivamogga city, deep in the Malnad belt — the Western Ghats foothills that receive among the highest rainfall in Karnataka. The region is known for coffee, cardamom, areca nut, and paddy cultivation, with Linganamakki Reservoir (on the Sharavathi River) nearby providing hydropower — the Sharavathi hydro project is one of Karnataka's major power sources. Jog Falls, one of India's highest waterfalls, is 30 km from Sagar — a significant tourism and engineering landmark. Electrical Engineering diploma graduates from Government Polytechnic Sagar have natural employment relevance in the Sharavathi hydropower infrastructure. Diploma graduates can pursue lateral entry into BE at PESITM Shivamogga or colleges in the Shivamogga district.
