About Cheluvamba Hospital and Mysore Medical College
Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), also known historically as Cheluvamba Hospital and Mysore Medical College, is one of India's oldest government medical colleges located in Mysuru, Karnataka. Established in 1924 under the Mysore kingdom's patronage, MMCRI is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). With a 100-year history and an intake of 150 students, MMCRI is Karnataka's most historically significant government medical institution outside Bangalore and the anchor of Mysuru's public healthcare system.

100-Year Government Medical Institution
Mysore Medical College was established in 1924 by the Mysore Wadiyar kingdom during an era when Sir M. Visvesvaraya as Dewan had transformed the princely state's institutions. The Cheluvamba Hospital — named after the queen mother of Mysore — has been the teaching hospital for generations of Mysuru's physicians. MMCRI's century of alumni have served in Karnataka's government health service, established specialist practices across India and contributed to medical research nationally.
MMCRI's postgraduate programme with MD/MS and super-speciality (DM/MCh) seats makes it a full academic medical centre — one of a handful of government medical colleges in Karnataka with super-speciality training capabilities. This postgraduate depth attracts NEET-PG qualifiers from across South India seeking government PG seats in Mysuru's lower-cost, culturally rich academic environment.
Mysuru — Second City Medical Ecosystem
Mysuru's healthcare ecosystem includes MMCRI, JSS Medical College, Mysore Hospital and multiple private hospitals. The Bangalore-Mysuru Expressway (2023) connects the city to Bangalore in under 90 minutes, giving MMCRI students access to Bangalore's medical conferences, coaching and specialist facilities while studying in one of Karnataka's most liveable cities. Mysuru's University of Mysore, heritage architecture and research institutions create an intellectually rich academic environment that complements MMCRI's medical education.
Career Scope
MMCRI MBBS graduates carry one of Karnataka's most respected government medical college credentials. NEET-PG competition for MMCRI's own MD/MS seats is significant given institutional prestige. Government KPSC medical officer positions, Mysuru and Bangalore hospital employment, independent specialist practice in Mysuru's growing healthcare market and research careers through MMCRI's affiliated research institute are the primary pathways after MBBS and specialisation.
